Weak and Timid, Intelligent and Logical: Theme

While reading “The Yellow Wallpaper” I noticed the way that the main character is seen and treated differently than John was treated.  The main character is seen as a weak and timid girl that was seen in a state of insanity.  But John was always seen as a logical and intelligent physician.  I’m sure this type of view that society gave was normal in the late 1800’s, but what if both men and women were seen as the same?  Both genders would be treated the same by society, one wouldn’t be seen as a second-class citizen.  Many times the main characters depression would be ignored by her husband, and he would just laugh at her.  “John is a physician, and perhaps—(I would not say it to a living soul, of course, but this is dad and a great relief to my mind)—perhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster. You see he does not believe I am sick!” (pg. 1)  If both men and women were equal, her depression could have possibly been helped, but society’s view on women changed that.

  1. I agree with you, if women were treated equally, Jane could have been kept from going insane. If men actually cared about women, then they would have found another way to treat her. Or she wouldn't even have been diagnosed with manic-depressive illness. If women were treated equally then they could become doctors, help the patients, and find a better way to deal with their sickness.

  2. I agree with you, that if men and women were treated equally they would of been the same in society. I like how you described Gilman character traits. If John actually treated Gilman the right way, maybe she wouldnt have been diagnosed with deprerssive illness. I like how you took quotes from the story and explained what the quotes meant.

  3. I like how you compared John and Jane's traits. I think you were right that if men and women were equal than Jane's sickness could have been helped. I also like the picture because it shows how Jane is part of the wallpaper.

  4. I agree with your concept of men and women not being treated equal. If they were treated equal, maybe Jane would not of gone that insane. Your blog was very well written. You use many supportive details to contribute to the blog and make this go into a higher level of writing. You also included everything that was needed in the blog!

  5. The picture you included to go along with your writing is great! The title you came up with is extremely creative and definitely connects to your writing. It definitely was the unfair treatment toward women that made Gilman suffer to the extreme. Nicely done!
